So we all travel differently! Some of us do it alone and meet people along the way, some do it with the love of their life or some with friends or family. Whether it is backpacking through Europe or taking a guided tour in Vietnam with your parents, I can guarantee you that you will learn a lot not only about different cultures but about yourself.
But it isn’t just travelling that will do this, you could just spend more time with yourself to learn a lot about yourself and the world around you!
So I want to share some things I have learnt from firstly travelling and discovering new places but also from being in my own company.
First, time management is key! If you learn good time management skills, your life will be a lot easier! People are busy, but most of the time they just don’t know how to manage their time better. Have a ‘to-do’ list, have priorities for each day and learn to be consistent with what you’re doing. The more consistent you are, the more you will get done!
You CAN miss a flight and still arrive at your destination and have a good time. This happened to me and my two friends on an American trip. We missed our LA and Vegas flight, shattered. They couldn’t get us on any flights until 12 hours later, so what did we do? Only the easiest thing ever, we got a $60USD taxi to Downtown to get a bus to Vegas, great in theory. Nope, couldn’t even do that, the next bus was 7 hours later, a taxi was going to cost $700USD. So our next solutions, Uber. Yep, an Uber to Vegas cost us $300USD plus tip and we made it to Vegas. You can read more about that here.
This leads me to the next thing I learnt, not everything will go right, but it makes a great story. God, I was so mad that day, but now it was one of the greatest stories. Sometimes things don’t work out, but we can’t change it so we just have to move on and work on a solution.
You can’t control someone. At the end of the day, we can control what we do, what we say and how we act, but we can’t control someone else! No matter how much we want to. So it is best to accept this and just handle the situations we are faced with.
Live in the present moment, when travelling or even just driving to work. Take in your surroundings, appreciate what you have and be grateful for the moments. When travelling I sometimes find I can focus on what we are doing next or what is coming up – especially if there is a certain place I’m so excited to see. This is where it is important to just soak in the now. Stop waiting until you have more money, until it’s the weekend, until your next flight leaves, until you reach that new destination. Treasure every moment and remember time waits for no one.
We judge others but we might have done the same thing being in their shoes. How many times have you judged someone for not doing the ‘right’ thing? How many times can you recall possibly doing something similar? Obviously, I’m not talking about extreme cases. Chances are, there is no way of knowing had you been in a similar situation you might have talked or acted the exact same way.
Life is too short to say no – regret later. When doing my ‘yes’ woman challenge, you can listen to it here. I said yes to everything, even if I couldn’t be bothered or if I would normally say no and I had so much fun. Sometimes we need to take chances and say yes to an opportunity, work it out as we go and “fake it until we make it”, also listen to more on that here. Chances are, we will regret what we haven’t done, not what we have done. One of these moments that stands in my mind the most is when I applied for a study tour whilst at uni. Not something I would normally do, but I applied, got accepted and it was the best decision I had made at the time! Read about it here.
Choose the bigger life! If ever faced with two choices, I ask myself – what option will bring me happiness but also an opportunity? Then pick that option and go with it!
Take that opportunity. As Richard Branson said, “if somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later”. Don’t let life moments fall away because you’re scared to take the leap! Opportunities don’t come around often.
Going out of routine isn’t always a bad thing. I love routine, but we all need to remember, it is okay to be out of your routine. Especially when travelling. Recently when I went to Cambodia and Vietnam I was adamant that I was going to still read every day, do mini work out and meditate, like I try to most days. Guess what? I didn’t keep up with this in the slightest. At first, I was hard on myself, but then I remembered, this was my break from all that and what I needed to do was enjoy time to reflect and enjoy. When I got home, I was less hard on myself when I didn’t get my routine 100% each day, we get busy! As long as I’m happy and productive, that’s okay!
Sometimes street food is less dangerous to eat than restaurant food! On my recent trip, especially in Vietnam, I ate more street food than restaurant food and I loved it so much! Just remember, the food is served very hot and fresh. Once they run out of food, that’s it. They can’t put it in a fridge or freeze and then serve days later!
Toilet paper is a luxury. Not only did I learn this in Vietnam, but also in Byron Bay when we ran out and had to flock to sites like Tinder and Bumble to potentially get someone to bring us some! Always be prepared, doesn’t matter where you are!
There is always, always two sides to every story. No matter what! Someone will have a different perception on a story and their own version, so listen.
Money is money. As long as you work hard and have a great work ethic, money is money. You shouldn’t let it get in the way of where you want to be. Do not stress about money because it is just a value, it doesn’t define who you are. The more you work towards your goals and the happier you are, the more you will earn. Stay focussed and just be smart with your money. Also, prioritise how you spend it. You can learn more on my podcast!
Always have a why or always ask why. Having a “why” and a purpose will give you a great sense of meaning and direction! My purpose? To inform and educate the world! I aim to do this through my career and through my platforms like this blog. When you’re doing something, always ask why. Why are you doing it? What purpose does it have? You will probably find you’re doing things that take up your time and are not adding value. Also, why helps to understand better!
Travel with friends while you’re young! You won’t get a lot of opportunities to do this in your lifetime so make the most of it! Up until 2018, I had only travelled with friends and it was so much fun. The stories you will have will never stop making you laugh!
Taking your parents on a holiday will be fun. To end 2018, we took a trip to Cambodia and Vietnam and it was the first time I had been overseas with my parents. It was dysfunctional, testing and there was an argument or 10 but it was so much fun! We learnt a lot and made it through, you can listen to all the funny stories here.
I CAN do anything I WANT. As long as you have the drive and motivation, there isn’t anything that can stop you. Don’t let people tell you that you can do anything! Just remember nothing is impossible.
Making mistakes isn’t a bad thing and failure creates more drive and determination – just learn. When something doesn’t go right or to plan, don’t let it knock you down if you want something, keep trying and stay focussed. Mistakes and failure help us to learn and change our processes to be successful. Failure can lead to different successes.
Do what’s right for YOU. Sometimes we have to put ourselves first to do what is best. Even if someone doesn’t like it. At the end of the day, you need to look after yourself to ensure you are happy. Self-love is important, say one thing you love about yourself each day, make it a habit.
Don’t give up on dreams, never! Do something each day to get you closer andcloser. It is all about being consistent as well as having the right mindset and attitude! You can achieve anything.
Taking regularly scheduled periods of R&R is crucial to happiness, health and success. Trips and holidays provide everyone with new perspectives and ideas by removing yourself from my day-to-day routine and environment and allows you to share time with friends and family.
There literally is nothing to fear or worry about, because you cannot fail, only learn and grow. To take risks, make sure they are educated but don’t be afraid to push past your comfort zone, it will be the best thing you ever do!
Just be happy. The truth is, there’s no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, then when? Your life will always be filled with challenges. It’s best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway.
