Places to eat in Melbourne

My extensive list of places to eat in Melbourne continues to grow! So here are some places you can add to your list…

Heading West?

Pier 71 – Altona

Pier 71 is an authentic Italian restaurant in the main street of Altona. If you want to experience the restaurants best dishes, look at the pizza menu. They have a huge selection of pizzas all cooked at 400 degrees in a stone based oven. Great vibes in the restaurant and even a back courtyard for a nice sunny day! Pier 71 is a nice place for lunch, although I haven’t been for dinner it seems more of a lunch venue.

St Burgs – Maribyrnong

Are you a burger lover? Add St Burgs to the list! Hidden in an apartment block in Maribyrnong, St Burgs use Gippsland beef (where I’m from) and have all the popular burgers on the list. I had the Cheesy D with cheese fries and I really rated the burger! It wasn’t too fatty, the beef patty wasn’t chewy and the bun wasn’t too thick – always the key aspects that make a good burger! I also tried the chicken wings, which I don’t recommend, they were okay just very plain. However overall good prices and fast service, just wish parking was easier to find.

Duchess of Spotswood – Spotswood

A small cafe in Spotswood, Duchess is a nice place for breakfast or lunch. With an extensive menu, they also offer great specials! If you are heading for lunch I recommend the Daddy Burger, really fresh ingredients and the homemade chips are so good! Or if you are a smashed avo fan, Green Envy will be your go to! The Duchess serves really great coffee and also they have a big courtyard, which is really child friendly. The only comment I would make is the few times I have been there the service was a little slow, but the food definitely made up for it!

Sunshine Social – Sunshine

New to the west is an old petrol station turned restaurant! Sunshine Social is a really chill and very interesting venue! They have a great outdoor area and a really bright atmosphere, it is a great summer lunch place. The menu consist of burgers, ribs, any form of grilled goodness, it is similar to Up in Smoke in Footscray.  If you like BBQ and smoked meat you must try Sunshine Social, the tandoori mango chicken drumsticks have a little kick but are really good!

Burger Culture – Williamstown

Yes another burger place… Burger Culture does a different take on the traditional ‘Melbourne’ style burger and it really works! They have a massive range of beef, chicken and vegetarian burgers with the most amazing tomato relish!! I’ve experienced Burger Culture twice and got two very different burgers. The Steak Feast burger was amazing, using a scotch fillet steak it was a very fancy and delicious burger! The Culture Princess is a grilled chicken burger with avocado and that amazing relish I was talking about! This is a great choice, it is super fresh and tasty! All the ingredients used at Burger Culture are fresh and it is definitely a healthier burger option – if there is such a thing!

In town?

Vapiano – Flinders Lane

An Italian restaurant tucked away on Flinders Lane, Vapiano is a great place to get fresh pizza and pasta! Making it right in front of you, you have the power to pick what you like and add or subtract any ingredients you want! You can choose the type of pasta you want and how you want it cooked! Vapiano serves great fresh food as they make their own pizza dough and pasta daily! The menu offers a lot of choices at responsible prices. The one thing about Vapiano that is difficult is when it gets busy you can wait a while to order your pasta and if you go with a group, you can find yourself eating at different times. I suggest going on a weeknight if you are having a group catch up!

Plus 5 – South Wharf

A cocktail bar situated in the row of restaurants overlooking the Yarra in South Wharf, Plus 5 is a great spot in the warmer and cooler months. You can sit in their cozy restaurant setting or head out the back and enjoy the views of the city and the river. In winter they have blankets, gas heaters and even fire pits so you can enjoy food and drinks in comfort. The menu has a great range of tapas and bigger meals and all the food looks amazing! In the winter they even have s’mores… yumm they were so delicious and definitely a perfect winter dessert.

Heading East?

Meat and Wine Co – Hawthorn East

If you are a steak lover you must try Meat and Wine Co. They have a few in Melbourne but the one in Hawthorn is a heritage listed bank site right in the heart of Camberwell Junction. The building – although seems a little out of place next to a huge apartment building – is so beautiful, warm and inviting. Going on a long weekend, the service was very slow, however the food was incredible! For entree I shared a bruschetta with my Mum and that was a great start to the meal, very fresh ingredients with a bit of a different twist, it has avocado on it, which I loved! Then the steak… oh wow! The New Yorker steak with blue cheese sauce and the side salad was amazing. The steak was cook perfectly and easily the best steak I have ever had. Seriously don’t even look at the other main meals, you must get the steak! Although the service was a little slow, the food has definitely got me wanting to go back.

Friends of Mine – Richmond

A cute cafe on Swan Street, Friends of Mine is a place I drive past everyday going to work. It is always busy with people getting their morning coffee and socialising before making the commute to work. You won’t believe what I ordered? Yes the smashed avocado with a side of chorizo. What made this smashed avo so good was the red capsicum hummus, such a good addition that gave it great flavour!

The menu at a Friend of Mine was huge, with great choices, my Mum ordered the porridge, which also looked amazing! The cafe staff were young and really friendly and the eclectic interior was bright and fun, which definitely helps on a Sunday brunch! Friend of Mine runs along the 70 tram line and is really close to Burnley station so it is very easy to get to.

Benny’s Burgers – Richmond

Owned by the chef at Melbourne’s famous Vue De Monde, you can expect Benny’s Burgers to be amazing and yes you would be correct to assume so. Using all organic ingredients for each burger you will be extremely happy with your choice to try it out! Located on Swan Street – next to Avenue Bookstore – the restaurant is decked out with booths and even a photo booth! Benny’s Burgers have their own beer on tap and wine for us non beer drinkers! I chose the cheesy burns and was not disappointed, the homemade fries are also a great choice. I think what I loved most about Benny’s Burgers was not feeling sick after eating all that food! All you Melbourne burger lovers, get down to Swan Street…like right now!

48h Pizza & Gnocchi Bar – South Yarra

If you really love gnocchi or just Italian in general you need to head to South Yarra! 48h Pizza and Gnocchi bar are famous for their gluten free gnocchi, which doesn’t leave you feeling sick from eating too much pasta!

img_6709

On the menu is three different gnocchi types followed by the different ingredient combinations you can get with the normal, charcoal or pawn gnocchi. Also, if you have more than four people, you can do the cheese wheel option, which is the gnocchi dish served in a wheel of parmigiano!

img_6710

The menu is huge, all the dishes aren’t expensive and wow the food is amazing! After sharing a pizza for entree, eating the seafood gnocchi and sharing a nutella calzone for dessert, I was full but didn’t feel like I’d eaten too much. The food was beautiful and the service was great! One thing is the restaurant is very small and intimate so if it is a busy night it can be loud.
